We love Mangos

Waiting for Mangos and hoping for an abundant harvest on Maui. Blossoms are everywhere but no sign of fruit yet. Is something different this year? Please let me know. Is nature skipping a season? El Niño? Why aren’t the mangos ready yet this year?

The rains at Ulupalakua

Look how pretty Ulupalakua is after a few rains. It became so green.

We saw wild turkeys, baby lambs, shorn sheep, goats and lots of trees at Maui’s Winery, one of our favorite places to just linger and feel a touch of old Maui at Ulupalakua Ranch.

Lovely Ulupalakua… The cloud so low you can barely see Lanai…

Moist and fresh

Perusing My Garden

There was a nice steady rain today up-country Maui. My garden loved the soft raindrops and delightful moisture.

I was preparing to harvest enough lettuce for fifty people to enjoy at Kupu Maui tomorrow.

My zinnias are blooming.

Papayas are happening.

Sunflowers about to open…

Some of the lettuce I harvested today…

Gotta love gardening on Maui.

Piliani Kope Farm

Coffee is what’s growing at Greg and Susy Stille’s two acre farm, among other things like cacao, ice cream bean, Nitrogen fixing peanut, daikon, Ma’o, alyssum, wild sweet potatoes, papaya, bananas, Plumerias and hibiscus.

Their palms are amazingly beautiful.

These are Susy’s new raised beds that Greg designed and made.

Ripe red coffee cherries.

Young Geisha coffee plant.

Ice cream bean

~ Another fun day at the farm.
It’s an amazing, diverse

Today at Kaanapali Coffee Estate

It was gorgeous Maui day…

At Kaanapali Coffee Estate

It’s an amazing five hundred acres of coffee seven minutes from the shore.

I love to hang out up there in the coffee.

Take a drive North from Kaanapali past the Sugar Cane Train to the entrance of Kaanapali Farms and head Mauka (towards the mountains)

Enjoy the beauty…

Maui Garden Update

Here’s the latest photos of my Maui Garden. Bibb lettuce is amazing.

Zinnias and yellow cosmos coming along nicely…

These are the healthiest zinnias I’ve ever planted. They are quite close together. I guess they like each other.

Can’t wait to see them bloom.

Stay tuned…

My Maui Garden Update

Hi everyone,
Here’s some photos of my garden in progress. There’s going to be tons of zinnias in red, purple and pinks. Cosmos are mixed in here with lettuces and basil.

Bush beans are so prolific. We’ll be picking soon.

Today I transplanted Roma tomato plants into the patch.

It’s a bit thick but I think it’s going to thrive.I’ll be thinning the lettuce soon and basils, too. Anyone want tomato plants? Bibb lettuce?
My Maui friends who are planting, let me know so I can give you some thinnings for your garden.

my amazing Bromeliad…

Tomorrow we depart for Ka’anapali. Let the “culinary experience” begin… Farm Tour is Saturday morning 9-12. Can’t wait to see everyone there!

Aloha

MauiGrown Coffee at Ka’anapali

The famed Maui Mokka, Red Catuai (Cat-Y-ee), and Yellow Caturra

We’ll be sampling these coffee cherries on the farm tour at Kaanapali Fresh “A Culinary Experience” Saturday September 1, 9 AM- 12PM

I’ll be giving the history of coffee from its origin in Ethiopia and migration to Yemen where it was first cultivated over a thousand years ago. Do you know how coffee was discovered?

That’s Jeff Ferguson above pictured next to a coffee harvester. It’s amazing how the rods spin among the coffee branches to shake the cherries loose where they fall into a hopper and an elevator takes them to the top to be transported by trailer to the mill.

It’s an amazing story of betrayal, love and legends that have been made about whole crops being destroyed and a single plant creating the future plants of all Central America, Brazil and Hawaii.

Maui is making history this very moment with our developing region of Ka’anapali where four varieties of coffee that are perfectly suited to the hot, dry conditions of West Maui are thriving. The Maui Mokka, Red Catuai, Yellow Caturra and Typicas, Progeny 502 and 6661 are thriving because of the efforts of James “Kimo” Falconer bringing the coffee plants back to health since they were abandoned in 2001 and left only on continuous irrigation.

It’s very exciting to delve deeper into the history of coffee. As I study the information I’m taken on a journey from Ethiopia where coffee is native, 50 miles away across the Red Sea to Yemen where coffee was first cultivated. From Yemen to the Dutch East Indies in the 1690’s where coffee plants were smuggled out of Arabia Felix (the ancient name for Yemen which means “fortunate Arabia” named for its fertile area). The Port of Al Mokha is actually what the Mokka is named after. The region of its birthplace is Ethiopia but today the Mokka variety is grown in Yemen at 10,000 feet. On Maui it does well at 500 feet above sea level in Kaa’anapali.

The single coffee plant that barely survived the journey was brought to the New World by a French Army officer to a Martinique plantation and that plant produced the seeds and cuttings that would produce coffee in the Caribbean, Central America, South America and eventually Hawai’i.

I love how a French Lieutenant wanted some beans from the Governor of French Guiana ( in South America ) but was turned down, so he sweet talked the Governor’s wife who gave him the beans. Brazil became the producer of a third of the world’s coffee due to the favorable climate.

Thirteen hundred years later coffee comes full circle when it returned to Africa via the newly built Uganda Railway to Kenya. White settlers were encouraged to plant and Nairobi became a coffee growing area with Mombasa as the major port.

If you’re not signed up for the Kaanapali Fresh Farm Tour see the link at KaanapaliFresh.

We’ll be making several stops in the various fields at Kaanapali Coffee Estate, tasting coffee cherries, meeting the man who made it possible, James “Kimo” Falconer, filming, photographing, then passing through the coffee mill for an overview of the processing from cherries being washed, pulped, dried, sorted and prepared for export in 100 lb. bags of green beans.

It’s going to be a beautiful, agricultural morning, from seed to cup and we’ll be having wonderful light refreshments by KupuMaui at the MauiGrown Coffee Company Store where guests will be exploring the historical smoke stack, the original sugar cane train, photos of the old Pioneer Mill, sampling MauiGrown Coffee on the Lanai and viewing th story of coffee inside where they can purchase and ship green, roasted, whole beans and ground 100 % MauiGrown coffee.

It’s so exciting to be a part of history in the making. I look forward to seeing you and sharing Kaanapali’s Agricultural Beauty.

MauiGrown Coffee Kaanapali Roast

Getting ready to share Kaanapali’s Agricultural Beauty at #KFreshMaui on Saturday, September 1, 2012 9-Noon

We’re hosting the Farm tour for 50 people, mostly media persons who have come to write about the Ka’anapali Fresh Culinary Event.
James “Kimo” Falconer is responsible for resurrecting the farm and establishing the brand “MauiGrown Coffee” in 2003. He’ll be on the farm to meet everyone on the tour.

Can’t wait to get Into the field and see the coffee trees ripe for harvest. We’ll be sampling coffee cherries in the Maui Mokka section of the Kaanapali Coffee Estates. Maui Mokka is gaining world wide recognition.

These are coffees packaged and ready to ship at the MauiGrown Coffee Company Store in Lahaina by the famous Old Pioneer Mill Smokestack.

There are four types of coffee grown on the 500 acre coffee estate. Red Catuai, Yellow Caturra, Typica and Mokka.

The tour is nearly sold out and we’re thrilled to be a part of Kaanapali Fresh a Culinary Event. It’s all about the culture, food, farms and coffee.
After touring the Coffee Estates and climbing up to the viewing platform for photos overlooking all of Kaanapali we’ll head to the MauiGrown Coffee Company Store to get an overview of the mill where the coffee is processed, then sample coffees, shop, see the behind the scenes story of coffee and enjoy wonderful refreshments on the lanai and in the shade by the Old Pioneer Sugar Mill landmark. Sitting there you feel a touch of old Maui. It’s really nice…

Hope to see you in Ka’anapali…

Hawaii Coffee News

MauiGrown Coffee

The first Maui Coffee Festival will take place this Saturday at The Shops at Wailea. The Maui Coffee Association together with the Maui County Farm Bureau have been planning this event for months.
Greg Stille, president of the Maui Coffee Association and president of the Hawaii Coffee Association says there will be tents near the fountain featuring coffee plants, coffee roasting and tasting of the winning Maui coffee growers from the Hawaii Coffee Association event which took place at the Maui Tropical Plantation in July.
This is an exciting and challenging time for coffee in Hawaii. MauiGrown is emerging as a world-renowned coffee just as Kona is fighting the coffee borer which has destroyed over thirty percent of their crops. Essential measures must be taken to destroy the coffee borers and also prevent the spread to other islands. This involves diligent removal of coffee cherries falling to the ground and incineration of them. The coffee borer gets into the cherries and can lay eggs and multiply creating a disaster for our agriculture industry. In discussions with James “Kimo” Falconer, of MauiGrown Coffee, Greg said they have talked about the need to treat trees with an anti-fungal product which the coffee borer doesn’t like and also getting to the wild trees deep in the valleys which is a mind boggling task.
Greg said it was difficult to get Maui Coffee Farmers to open up their farms to visitors during the recent event due to fear of spreading the bug. Currently, anyone who has visited a Kona Coffee Farm must remove that clothing before traveling. He held a welcoming event at their two acre organic coffee farm Piliani Kope Farm in Launiupoko.
Greg has traveled to Kona for the monthly meetings as well as twice a month to Honolulu to participate at the legislature in the communication on Ag House Bill 280 (the self certification bill)
and a bill to prevent Ag theft and Ag counterfeiting. There’s a lot in the works and please follow Maui Country Farm Tours for all the exciting events to come. They’re hoping to have monthly events about coffee including students, pastry chefs, bringing food and agriculture to the forefront of Maui Tourism.
If you want to learn and taste some of the most delicious coffee on the planet come to Wailea, Saturday August 4, 2012.

Kailua Morning

Today I had the pleasure of meeting my twitter and Facebook friend Marianne Schultz @DaMews in Kailua.

She’s good friends with Camille of Camille’s on Wheels. (excellent foodie) Here holding mango pie.

Marianne, Koele and me at Camille’s

Camille @Camillesonwheel
LOL 1 wheel We sampled grilled cheese with roasted pablano chiles on Hawaiian Sweet Bread that was fabulous and teriyaki soft taco with an amazing slaw that complimented everything with its sweet mirin mixture.

Michael and Camille…

To top everything off Camille had baked Mango Pie that was delightful. She insisted I take a piece of pie to @AlohaBruce (my next stop) in Hawaii Kai.

I had a wonderful day visiting friends…

Hawaii is the best place not only for the breathtaking beauty but the small town friendliness even on a more populated island like Oahu.

Awesome place to live…

Carnival Cruisers

Thank you to travel agent Donna Hurd for booking this wonderful tour with us.

Large groups are fun and challenging.
We had an awesome time at the Lavender Farm where they set up tables down below on the farm just days before the first KupuMaui Brunch. Christie transported some of our handicapped guests in the Gator. (it’s like a small golf cart with a flatbed)
I sang and played ukulele while Ricky served huge strawberries, Maui Gold Pineapple, guava and lilikoi juices and delicious by Whole Foods Market Kahului, Maui. They loved everything!

Gorgeous day at Maui’s Winery…

Parting shot…

Carnival and Disney Cruise Ships will be returning to Kahului Harbor in October. We look forward to taking many of you on our Country Farm Tour.

Aloha,

Hand-Made Cards completed

Today I wrapped up over 200 gift cards.

These were created exclusively for the Lavender Farm.
Alii Kula Lavender Maui

I enjoyed making each one. There’s something about hand-made that feels so country and relaxed in this busy technological world.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my devices
but I long to slow down daily and this takes me to that soothing place.

See them in the boutique at AKL Maui

I’m so happy…
